Aquabio Ltd - Reverse Osmosis (Water Reuse)

Aquabio Ltd are market leaders in the United Kingdom for industrial wastewater reuse. A combination of AMBR / BIOVERT technology and reverse osmosis provides potable quality water for reuse in the clients upstream processes.

Industrial water reuse has the following provides savings for the end user because potable water inlet from the water utility are reduced and trade effluent charges reduced or removed completely.

A typical reverse osmosis system will allow for a recovery of 70% of the industrial wastewater for reuse.

Enhanced Capital Allowance

In the UK the Department of Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) allows efficient membranes systems to be included on the Enhanced Capital Allowance (ECA) scheme. Full details can be found on the Business Link website (ECA Water). For eligibility of technologies please follow this link on the Defra website

The ECA scheme enables businesses to claim 100% first year capital allowances on investments in technologies and products that encourage sustainable water use. Businesses are now able to write off the whole cost of their investment against their taxable profits of the period during which they make the investment.

The following quote outlines the requirements to meet the ECA scheme;

"Equipment comprising an efficient membrane filtration system for the treatment of wastewater by means of microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration and/or reverse osmosis to enable recovery and on-site reuse of at least 40% of the wastewater received by the efficient membrane filtration system is eligible for a Certificate of Environmental Benefit. The eligible equipment includes the necessary ancillary equipment required to ensure the functionality of the complete membrane filtration system and membrane bioreactor technology"

RO Technology - Membranes

Aquabio Ltd utilise the latest low fouling membrane systems. These membranes are ideal for industrial wastewater applications; they offer low fouling membrane chemistry with high efficiency flow and rejection characteristics. These lower fouling membranes require less frequent cleaning whilst maintaining a high permeate flow.

The use of these low fouling membranes significantly reduces the need for feed water pretreatment upstream of the reverse osmosis system.

Aquabio Ltd use reverse osmosis modules wound in a spiral membrane configuration. The RO membrane has the following effects:

RO membranes will reject dissolved and suspended materials including monovalent salts. Since essentially all dissolved and suspended material is rejected by the membrane, the RO permeate is essentially pure water.

Please see the attached sheet highlighting the difference between Ultrafiltration, Nanofiltration and Reverse Osmosis

RO System

A complete RO system for wastewater treatment, recovery and re-use using membrane technology consists of a feed tank, permeate and reject handling facilities, monitoring and control units and a cleaning in place system. Pre- and post-treatment may also be incorporated into the process depending on the level of quality required for re-use.

Aquabio Ltd use a number of different technologies to ensure that the water reaching the point of use remains usable; these include carbon filters, chlorine dioxide dosing and UV disinfection. The exact requirements are tailored to the end users requirements and type of reuse required.

Aquabio Ltd have water reuse projects operating in the UK for the following water reuse duties:

RO treated water, and in some cases AMBR treated water is also suitable for reuse in the following applications:s eg washing, cleaning, cooling towers, fire fighting, irrigation etc
